SMILE!!! What is there to smile about, you may ask. Well it is Talking Tip Tuesday to start with! And for many of us, we had Monday off to celebrate our great nation! So there are two great reasons to smile, but I will give you another. BABIES. Yes BABIES. I don’t know about you, but for me, babies always make me smile. As a matter of fact, I had three babies visiting me on Saturday and I couldn’t stop smiling. There is just something about babies that automatically brings us joy and causes us to smile. So what does that have to do with Talking Tip Tuesday? Well, I have a few fun facts for you about social skill development and babies.
A simple smile from you helps your baby feel safe and secure.
Smiling at your baby is good for bonding and attachment.
Smiling at your baby releases hormones that can boost brain and overall development.
Smile at your baby, play peek-a-boo, use a higher pitched voice, and keep your baby close to you. A six week old can only see about 12 inches, so holding your baby in your arms when you are talking to him is the perfect distance to foster connection and development.
So, when will your baby smile back at you? Well, you may see a reflex smile the day your baby is born. Did you know that babies have reflex smiles while still in a mother’s tummy! Crazy right! The reflex smile typically stops around 2 months of age, but don’t worry, that is the same time that you will start seeing a true smile. And as sweet and precious as the reflex smile can be, nothing beats seeing your baby smile in response to your voice!
Who knew, something as simple and natural as smiling at your baby, is one of the key building blocks to social development and communication.
Keep smiling, everyone! See you next Tuesday!!!
