Talking Tip Tuesday -Birth-18 months
Today is the first Tuesday in August, so that means it is time for some BABY TALK!
First, I would like to shout out a BIG Happy 20th Birthday to my BABY girl, Isabelle! Sweetie, you have overcome so many challenges in your life. Your determined personality has been challenging for me as a parent at times, but it has helped you push through and persevere no matter what life has sent your way. I am proud of the young woman you are and know that God is going to use you in some amazing ways. I love you!!
So, now let’s get back to Talking Tips for your babies. This may seem like common sense to some and to others, it may seem strange or silly. But my talking tip for today is just that, TALK. Yes, you heard me TALK. Talk to you babies. Talk to them from the moment they are placed in your arms and all through your day. Talk to them as if they understand exactly what you are saying. Read them short picture books and show them drawings. Sing to them, even if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket. I promise, they won’t mind!
Did you know that babies come hardwired to learn ANY language! When you talk to your baby it literally helps their brain organize the sounds they are hearing to learn the language that you are speaking. One more fun tip, most of us naturally raise the pitch of our voice, slow down our pace, and speak in a rhythmical way when we talk to babies. This infant directed speech is also known as caregiver speech or “motherese” and many studies have shown that it helps infants attend to the speaker, understand when sentences start and stop, and learn vowels for their language!
Even better, many research studies show the greater the number of words a child hears in the first three years of life impacts, the better their language development and overall success with academics and life. Though there are many factors that contribute to a child’s language acquisition and overall success, it is evident that being a part of an engaging and language rich environment is a critical factor.
When you talk to your baby, be sure to pause and give them a chance to respond! You will be surprised at what you hear! Often babies will babble when given a chance to be a part of the conversation and it is so rewarding to hear their little voice begin to take shape. So CHAT IT UP with that precious little one!
